Wall to Wall: Carpets by Artists

Curated by: Cornelia Lauf, Independent Curator
Editor: Megan Lykins Reich

Wall to Wall: Carpets by Artists focuses on a medium that cuts across cultural divides, a familiar form with ancient history, wide-ranging expression, and diverse function. The exhibition presents 30 artists from across the globe whose carpets generate relevant discourse about art, craft, design, décor, labor, and geopolitics;the catalog chronicles over 60 contemporary artists working in this medium, from Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol to Christian Jankowski and Takashi Murakami. Curated by Cornelia Lauf, with guest essays by Ken Lum and Germano Celant, the exhibition and catalog studies contemporary art carpets as conceptual objects that both question and advance urgent artistic topics and practices. This exhibition raises many questions. How do artworks bridge national boundaries, cultures, and histories? Are the divisions between art, craft, and design necessary, or even real anymore? What are notions of East and West today, and how do art objects embody or upset these beliefs? While the carpets are first and foremost works of art, they also represent complex issues of collaboration and delegation. Designed by artists living in metropolitan centers, most of the carpets are hand-knotted by skilled weavers living in places like Nepal, Mexico, and Afghanistan. Wall to Wall raises questions about the geopolitics of production and sales, and the ways in which they respond to and express the significance of the artist in creating value and demand. With range and depth, Wall to Wall reveals how artists are advancing contemporary art practice and confronting complex issues through this ancient yet persistent medium.
